At one level, there is little anyone can do to stop IaaS from becoming commoditized. It is infrastructure's destiny to be a long-term commodity.
However, there is always room for some differentiation based on the quality of services IaaS providers offer. Important characteristics to focus on include increased levels of reliability, availability and security. We are likely to encounter some major scares with IaaS -- particularly around the availability of mission-critical infrastructure and security breaches in IaaS environments.
Iaas providers that can develop a reputation for excellence in these areas will be able to create some long-term differentiation in their IaaS offerings.
