The Avnet Cloud Marketplace was introduced as the distributor's next-generation cloud marketplace or as a follow-up to its Avnet Cloud Toolset (ACT) launched a year ago in the U.S. and Canada.
While ACT provided billing and usage tracking of cloud services -- primarily infrastructure as a service (IaaS) -- delivered in a portal for value-added resellers (VARs) and managed service providers (MSPs), the Avnet Cloud Marketplace offers IaaS, platform as a service and software as a service, and continues to focus on the delivery of complete offerings through partners, according to Tim Fitzgerald, vice president of Avnet Cloud Solutions in the Americas.
The new Avnet Cloud Marketplace also addresses the entire partner ecosystem -- not just traditional infrastructure VARs, but also born-in-the-cloud partners, MSPs and independent software vendors, to name several players in the ecosystem.
While Avnet isn't the first to market with a cloud marketplace, the market for marketplace opportunities is still embryonic, according to Jeff Kaplan, managing director at ThinkStrategies Inc. In fact, Kaplan noted that the various cloud marketplaces haven't seen a lot of marketplace business generated to date.

Today's announcement also includes the delivery of complete offerings through a branded storefront capability. "So, more than just a simple purchasing and provisioning portal for partners, these are full, standalone storefronts that allow a partner to customize their catalog up to and including adding their own offerings," Fitzgerald said.
Additional features allow for self-service capabilities, such as the selection of cloud offerings, provisioning of accounts and the provisioning of cloud services.
The Avnet Cloud Marketplace will initially offer more than 50 cloud offerings that span both the technology providers and cloud providers it represents. The distributor expects to add offerings on a regular basis, or about every couple of weeks, according to Fitzgerald.
